School of Traditional Fiddle & Piano
Now accepting new students for the 2019 Summer Season! Lessons will take place for a total of 6 weeks from July 3-24 and August 7-14th. Limited spots available.
This season marks our 34th year at the Sherryl Fitzpatrick School of Traditional Fiddle & Piano which is located in Barrhaven, ON.
We teach Canadian Old-time, Irish, Cape Breton, and Quebecois styles of fiddle. Our method of instruction is by ear or by written note. However, our teaching methods are adaptable to each student’s needs.
In addition to teaching fiddle music, Sherryl also teaches classical violin using the Royal Conservatory and Suzuki methods as well as teaching theory. She prepares students for RCM violin exams, theory exams as well as auditions into violin programs for high school or university. All her students have achieved a 100% success rate when playing for their exams reaching Honours or Honours with distinction.
In addition to teaching all styles of fiddling, she has also been teaching piano accompaniment for many years. She has been providing accompaniment for students and fiddle competitors at various fiddle contests in Ontario. She performs with the “Tiger Island Trio”, “Bb Sisters” and “Patrick Nolet”. She is also in demand as a piano accompanist for Special guest fiddlers, namely Martin Aucoin, Germain Leduc, Kimberley Holmes, Peter Dawson among many others.
Trent Bruner and I transcribed Randy Foster’s new original fiddle tunes for his 6th cd entitled, “No More Alarms”. We organized it into a teaching accompaniment book for both piano and/or guitar players. For each tune, we have two-three variations so that the student can progressively learn a more enhanced version to continue with their development.
Students of all ages are afforded the opportunity to take part in a free monthly jam session as a member of the Ottawa Traditional Fiddling and Folk Art Society (OTFFAS) for the 2018-2019 season. Students will be playing for old-time dances in the Ottawa area in addition to a year end dance in June!
